Rebecca Coulter is a professor in the Faculty of Education where she also serves as the Director of Aboriginal Education. In addition to co-ordinating and teaching in the graduate program, “Leadership in Aboriginal Education,” offered at Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, Rebecca supervises several master’s and doctoral students whose research is in the area of First Nations education. The research of the 15 students who, in 2009, successfully completed the Master of Education program offered at Walpole Island, is published in the book, The Gifts Within: Carrying Each Other Forward in Aboriginal Education, edited by Rebecca. Currently she is the principal investigator for the SSHRC funded project, First Nations Re-conceptualize Educational Assessment. This project, developed in partnership with the Indigenous Education Coalition, and with co-investigators Bruce Stonefish, Brent Debassige and Jason Brown and collaborator Jerry White, is exploring traditional and culturally relevant approaches to understanding student success and preparing assessment tools.
